---PLOT---
In Beatrice Priors dystopian Chicago society is divided into five factions each dedicated
to a different trait. Amity (the peaceful) Abnegation (the selfless) Candor (the honest) Eurodite (the
intelligent) and Dauntless (the brave). On a predetermined date of each year, all sixteen year olds
must choose the faction to which they will dedicate the rest of their lives. For Beatrice it is a choice
between staying with her family (in Abnegation) or choosing to be brave.
Throughout the incredibly brutal and competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames
herself Tris and a whole new person seems to come along with her name. Tris strives to figure out
where her friends really stand and where, if anywhere, the rather dashing, sometimes aggravating
boy fits into the life she has chosen. But Tris has a life threatening secret that will make or break her
existence in this post apocalyptic world, and threaten to unravel her "perfect" society.
---MY OPINION---
I have been wanting to read this book for a while so my expectations were high. And, I
gotta tell you, Divergent absolutely met those standards. It is the first in the Trilogy that I am now
incredibly eager to read. I love how Roth didn't make Tris your normal, pretty, somehow amazing at
everything she is doing throughout the book, protagonist. She made her a scrawny, plain, selfish girl,
and I loved every second. Being raised in Abnegation, Tris's natural instinct should be to be selfless,
but throughout this book she repeatedly and knowingly chooses to be selfish. Now, don't get me
wrong, I am wholeheartedly against being selfish. However, in this book I feel like Tris's acts of
selfishness were completely justified and somehow necessary to her growth as a character. I cannot
begin to explain how conflicting this book has been for me. Roth's writing is absorbing, sharp, and
really refreshing. I could go on and on about how she got beat up and didn't turn into a ninja warrior,
but instead, she learned from her mistakes. And I love that. This book is all about overcoming your
fears in the face of others expectations. I rate it $$$$$ out of $$$$$
---CONTENT--
One thing that I have to stress about this book, is the brutality. There are several
gruesome deaths, one suicide, and one very cruel kidnapping with a side of betrayal, that will break
your heart. Throughout the book there is constant fights, not to the death, just for training. I am glad
to say that there is little to no profanity in this book. There is also some intimate kissing, and in
Tris's fear landscape, one of her fears is intimacy. This novel is targeted for ages 13 and up. I really
enjoyed this book and I wholeheartedly believe that you will enjoy it to.
