Mr. Peabody and Sherman

What is Mr. Peabody and Sherman? I will be honest with you all. Before this movie came out I had never even heard of Mr. Peabody. Which now, I think it is quite sad that I hadn't. The show, Mr. Peabody and Sherman, came out in the late 1950's and early 1960's television in the show Peabody's Improbable History, segments created by Ted Key, and was voiced by Bill Scott, while Sherman was voiced by Walter Tetley. It is about a beagle who is one of the most intelligent creatures on the planet. He had adopted a boy named Sherman because he realized he needed a family. The twist that made the episodes popular were that Mr. Peabody had created a time machine. In each episode, they would go on adventures to different times. These creative short episodes were funny, entertaining, and very educational. When I saw the commercial for the new adaptation of the original series that came out in March, I did get a little excited. It seemed child-like and cute. I was going to watch it even if it was childish. (I am just that kind of girl) But I was very wrong about this movie.

Plot: The movie, Mr. Peabody and Sherman, develops just how awesome Mr. Peabody is. It is obvious he and Sherman go on many adventures. But the point of the movie is that Sherman will soon go on an adventure by himself..... SCHOOL! (Scary, I know.) As the movie progresses, there are some controversies over how Mr. Peabody is not a suitable dad for Sherman. We now introduce Penny, a classmate of Sherman's. Penny hates Sherman and Sherman hates Penny. In order to get Penny to like him, Sherman shows her "The Way Back". "The Way Back"is Mr. Peabody's time machine. Of course, the kids can't help but use it which causes some problems. Penny gets engaged to King Tut, in Egypt, and Sherman comes back to tell Mr. Peabody. While they go back to get Penny, more problems arise making this movie very interesting since you don't know what time period they will end up in next.

Good:  This movie blew me away with how funny it was. It had so many jokes I think I even missed some because I was too busy laughing at the earlier joke. One thing that was good about this movie was that none of the humor seemed forced or rude just to make it funny. This movie dealt with mature aspects as well. The whole point of the movie is that Mr. Peabody is struggling with Sherman realizing that he is very different from other children because Mr. Peabody is a dog. Children do not usually have dogs that are dads. During the movie Sherman and Mr. Peabody have arguments which frustrate Mr. Peabody, because as his friend Leonardo Da Vince says, "Children are not Machines." ( Yes, Leonardo Da Vinci) They are not that easy. This humorous tale has some interesting twists that will keep you entertained and very educational in  a way that you don't even realize you are learning. I am pretty sure that was the point of the TV series too. ;)

Bad: There is not that much in this movie that I would say is bad. It is Rated PG. There is no cussing or anything inappropriate. There is a mild sexual innuendo that only adults will catch, and some toilet humor. The adults are shown having drinks but other than that it is very tame. Penny learns in the beginning that if she marries King Tut and he dies she will be disemboweled and mummified. They do not rest on this too much but it may only be frightening for age 6-under.

My Opinion:  As I said earlier, I was wrong about my first opinion of this movie. I was wrong. I enjoyed this movie immensely!! Before I wrote this review, I read a few other reviews about this movie. I wanted to see what other people thought about it. Everybody else said this movie was for ages 6 to 12-ish. Most people said that teens would not like it. Folks, coming from a teen, I can honestly say that your teenagers will enjoy it. They may not be coming out of the theater going, "That was the best movie ever!!!" but they will not be disappointed.I really liked this movie and I would recommended it for ages 6 and UP! I hope you enjoy this movie like I did. This movie made me think about my relationship with my dad, because the movie is about Mr. Peabody and Sherman finding a balance in their relationship.
